VENTS TwinFresh ventilators – danger of the tricky radon gas
The problem of acute radon concentration is up-to-date in many countries of the world.
Radon is the neutral colourless odourless radioactive gas that is generated as a result of uranium and radium splitting. These heavy metals are contained in various concentrations in terrestrial rocks, soil, clay, water. Insignificant radon eradiation is not harmful for the human health but long-lasting stay in area with high radon concentration may result in heavy diseases.
Radon is a heavy gas, so it is concentrated in cellars, basements, on the ground surface and on the first floors of multi-storeyed buildings and cottages. It is a proven fact that the inhabitants of rich radon areas are continuously subjected to radiation from radon isotopes and radon degradation products during their stay in residential and office premises. The indoor radon concentration is determined by many factors, including the ventilation type and air exchange rate, type and rate of heat convection, door and window insulation. The more a premise is heat insulated, the higher radon concentration is inside and it rises drastically during heating season because of large indoor and outdoor temperature differences.
However the solution for such a threatening problem is quite simple. Quality mechanical ventilation that allows to remove collected radon from the premise is the basic target against the dangerous gas. Even single air exchange per one hour enables decreasing radon concentration by two factors.
Arranging centralized ventilation is no problem for the premises under construction or refurbishment. But what is a solution for the owners of ready-built flats, premises, houses with no or poor quality ventilation, especially if general house reconstruction is not on the agenda?
We offer a solution. The modern single-room TwinFresh ventilators from VENTS that are designed for installation into an outer wall of any premise and are specially developed to create efficient supply and extract ventilation.
To solve the problem of high radon concentration the VENTS TwinFresh ventilators must be installed close to the floor level where the gas is collected to enable radon extraction outside. The units are equipped with a high-tech ceramic energy accumulator (heat exchanger) that recuperates heat and moisture contained in the extract air to warm up clean supply air in winter or cool it down in summer. This way it saves your costs for heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. When the units operate in reverse mode with energy regeneration, the TwinFresh ventilators change the ventilation direction from supply to extract and vice versa once in 70 seconds. This way it is possible to arrange quality air exchange and provide fresh air supply and removal of radon-concentrated extract air outside with the single-room TwinFresh ventilators of VENTS series.
In Ukraine the radon-related risks are quite high. A great part of the country is located on the crystalline shield of the earth shell, rich in radium and uranium. The main uranium deposits are found in Kirovograd area, known for its industrial uranium ore extraction. Consequently, the entire region has higher radon concentration.
The local authorities took steps to develop a special Stop radon program to study the radon concentration situation in the region and to work out required measures to control radon concentration in social establishments in Kirovograd region.
Except for complex researches of radon concentration in schools, kinder gardens, health care facilities and other social objects, Stop radon program has practical application aimed to decrease radon concentration. One of the required actions is to arrange quality ventilation system based on single-room VENTS TwinFresh ventilators to ensure quality radon removal. The leaders of Stop radon program plan to install TwinFresh ventilators in 114 educational facilities of the region till opening of a heating season. Already in November-December the experts will repeatedly measure radon concentrations in these premises. That check will prove a real anti-radon efficiency of the VENTS TwinFresh ventilators.
The Chief of Department of emergency and Chernobyl accident effect population protection in Kirovograd regional state administration Vladimir Zhuk stated that special individual ventilators of home manufacture were specifically selected due to their economical and efficient features. The industrial air conditioning systems are very expensive and require complicated and long installation. About 70% of all the inspected facilities have no ventilation.
That is a pilot project to implement anti-radon program based on the VENTS TwinFresh single-room ventilators in Kirovograd region. But we do hope that the successful results will show good example for other Ukrainian regions that want to keep the idea of healthy way of living and fresh air in each house.
